How to Equalize While Freediving: A Guide to Frenzel

Frenzel equalization uses the tongue and throat to create pressure with less effort than trying to blow from the lungs. Freedivers normally equalize gently and early, before discomfort develops. If equalization becomes painful, forceful, inconsistent, or impossible, stop descending rather than forcing it.

What Frenzel equalization is

Equalization is the process of balancing pressure in the middle ear and other air spaces as you descend underwater. For most beginner freedivers, the main technique to learn is Frenzel equalization.

During Frenzel, the glottis closes so air is not pushed up from the lungs. With the nostrils gently pinched, the tongue acts like a piston and compresses the air already in the mouth and throat. That pressure is directed toward the middle ears through the Eustachian tubes. The movement is small: it should feel more like forming a firm "T," "K," or "G" sound with the back of the tongue than straining the abdomen. You may feel or hear a light click or opening sensation in both ears.

A simple way to feel the movement on land is to sit upright, breathe normally, gently pinch the nostrils closed, keep the chest and abdomen relaxed, close the glottis as though briefly holding your breath, and make a controlled "K" or "T" movement with the tongue, stopping as soon as the ears equalize. Practice gently and only for short periods. The goal is to recognize and isolate the tongue movement, not to produce the strongest possible pressure. Why freedivers learn Frenzel

Frenzel uses the tongue and throat rather than the lungs, chest, and abdomen. It is generally more controlled and efficient for freediving than pushing air from the chest, and it uses a smaller air space, which makes it better suited to relaxed, repeated equalization during a descent.

When to equalize during a descent

Equalize at the surface before descending, then continue gently and frequently before pressure becomes uncomfortable. Do not wait for pain. If an equalization does not work, stop the descent, rise slightly if appropriate, relax, and do not continue unless pressure clears comfortably.

A slow, controlled descent gives you time to notice when the ears need attention. Never continue descending through ear or sinus pain.

How Frenzel differs from Valsalva

Valsalva equalization uses pressure generated by the lungs, chest, and abdominal muscles. It may work near the surface, but it becomes less effective as depth increases and can create unnecessary effort and tension.

Frenzel uses the smaller air space above the closed glottis, which makes it better suited to relaxed, repeated equalization throughout a freediving descent.

Common Frenzel problems

Equalization can be affected by starting too late, descending too quickly, tension in the face, jaw, or throat, poor head position, congestion, allergies, or a recent illness, opening the glottis and pushing from the chest instead of using the tongue, failing to keep the soft palate in a position that allows pressure to reach the nose and ears, or an inefficient or inconsistent Frenzel tongue position.

Do not dive when congestion prevents comfortable equalization. Never use medication simply to hide symptoms so you can dive without appropriate medical advice.

A useful check on dry land is whether you can equalize with your lungs relaxed and your chest still, using only the tongue and throat. If equalization only happens when you tense your abdomen or bear down, you are probably still using Valsalva. Being able to repeat the movement gently, several times in a row, without a build-up of effort is a better sign than a single forceful success.

Why Frenzel stops working head-down

Head-down is a different problem from upright practice. Body position changes the angle of the airway and where air sits, the movement has to work as flexibility decreases with depth, and the whole thing has to happen while you stay relaxed and moving. Technique that works standing in a kitchen can fail on a line for all of those reasons at once, which is normal rather than a sign you cannot learn it.

Why equalization may work on land but fail underwater

Head-down equalization can initially feel harder than practicing upright. Body position, tension, timing, soft-palate control, depth, and stress can all affect equalization even when the same technique works easily on land. If Frenzel works on land but not during a dive, slow down, remain shallower, and work with an instructor rather than forcing more pressure.

Should you use an electronic pressure gauge for practice?

Devices that measure the pressure produced during an equalization attempt exist, and some coaches use them. What is worth saying is that equipment cannot replace correct technique, comfort in the water, appropriate supervision, or qualified instruction, and that pressure or pain should never be treated as a training target to push toward.
